Professional Wardrobe Planning: ROI

Your clothing says a lot about who you are to others. You’re a professional.

You’re confident in your abilities, but if your suit doesn’t fit you properly, it can send the message that you don’t pay attention to the details. #perception

cohen in office large shot

Think about it:

That guy… (we all know that guy ) strolls in with posture and walks with confidence. He’s got what the kids call… SWAG. Yes, clearly he dresses for success, and while I agree looks aren’t everything, perception can be. Are you willing to take that risk?

For most of people, it’s easier said than done to simply see trends/styles on the streets of the Financial District or in the office, then try to transalte the same look into their own wardrobe, body and budget.  Most haven’t cultivated personal style sensibilities enough to single handedly create the look alone; herein lies the frustration! SO where to begin?

Every man is different, so to should his apparel be.

Sure, any man could go to a store and pick out a suit. However, that suit wasn’t made for you… or for ANYONE! Nothing wrong with purchasing a suit off the rack (OTR) unless you feel you are ready to hit the street as soon as the sales person has handed over your zipped up garment bag.

whoa stop sign

STOP RIGHT THERE.

Too many well intentioned gentlemen I have worked with have made this unknowing mistake of thinking the journey to the perfect suit is over after point of sale. If you don’t go the custom route, to achieve Fit over Fad or Style over Trends —> TAILORING is key!

I don’t mean pant and sleeve shortening, that’s a given. I mean, taper the body (no one wants to look boxy), taper the sleeves (no man wants the blousy look), adjust the pant waist and pant leg so it fits YOU. Professional Wardrobe Planning guides you in your purchases so that your wardrobe, just like any good investment can get you the greatest return. #ROI

Fact is … most men already know the look they want.

For me it’s not simply about suggesting what’s trendy for men, rather it’s about creating a style that is as personal as your signature.

I bring years of  Wardrobe Planning experience to the table, and I know that takes the intimidation factor out of finding that perfect dress shirt and suit. Proper Wardrobe Planning is an investment in yourself. It becomes a vehicle through which YOU can now be in the drivers seat when it comes harnessing public perception and turning it into what YOU want it to be!

ROGER THAT!

Bomber jacket and boots.

Bomber style Aviator + Boots

It’s time for that dangerous and touchy subject that causes distress for many Canadians. Although we try to escape the chilly beginnings of fall, also known as the preview of winter, our closet is about do the ol’ switcharoo. Many prepare to hibernate and stay in but with all these new yet classic trends that are reintroducing themselves to the world of fashion, it is almost impossible not to ‘show them what you’re working with’.

A GO-TO piece for this fall/ winter is the leather aviator jacket. A jacket that adds a captivating effect with a touch of ‘cool’ flavour but how do you can frame that cool piece and move from basic to all around stylish?

Consider a classic look such as a simple sweater and good pair of dark denim, finish it off with the baddest pair of combat boots. Cuff those jeans or have them loosely tucked in at the mouth of the boot and the turning heads will become almost overwhelming.

aviator                         aviator1

Another way to work around this jacket would be what we like to call ‘the wealthy’ look. Really simple so listen up! Turtleneck, slim fitting trouser paired with a leather belt and matching Oxford shoes. Simple, right? If you’re more burly and that was a tad to posh for your taste replace the trousers with some tough denim and exchange those oxfords for bad-boy boots. Add a bit of style with a little detail by rolling or tucking the jeans in the rim of your boots.

This fall piece is a simple classic that has done justice for many sharp shooting men and has returned in all its glory to serve and add a dominating style to men everywhere.

Long Hair Don’t Care?

So it’s the trend of the year it seems: the bearded man. Coincidentally it’s also the accessory of the season for ladies: a bearded man…

Grow them if you will but all I ask is that if you decide to grow a Gentleman’s beard (any kind of facial hair really) dare I ask that you maintain that bad boy with the right essentials.

[I will preface by stating that his skin although beautiful (whatever, I’m biased!) like many men, can get quite problematic when shaving due to a very coarse and full hair growth.]

So if you are a Modern Man sans el beardo the cool thing about The Barbers Brew beard oil is that it’s a great way to keep it soft, shiney and most importantly smelling terrific!

On the converse, of you have love for the beard but are admiring from a distance, not sure if you can pull it off, the comfort factor or for uneven hair-growth reasons, you choose not too … GOOD NEWS: you can still enjoy the beard oils. It’s a preshave as well as a conditioning beard oil.

Undressing today’s man: Men’s fashion enters a renaissance

Fortune

A man waits with shopping outside a store on Oxford Street in central London.

FORTUNE — To all the ladies out there wondering, yes, that man in the cubicle next door or the guy at the grocery store does indeed have a better wardrobe than you.

And that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. For the past few years, the gentleman shopper has been flexing his fashion purchasing power. In 2013, menswear sales grew by just under 5% worldwide, slightly outpacing womenswear, according to a report released this week by Euromonitor. That trend held true in some of the world’s biggest markets — in the U.S., U.K., and Germany, sales-growth of men’s apparel topped women’s.

“Men’s — historically — doesn’t move as much, period. It’s more resilient in a down time since they’re more brand loyal,” says Eric Beder, managing director at Brean Capital. That means a man devoted…

3….2….1… BEARD OFF!

Beards that make women TICK!

Hairy men and anything even associated with overly excessive hair had been a taboo for way to long. Strong Hairy men in the seventies were celebrated and was the intended ideal man for most woman. It has been introduced with a warm welcome in the recent months with so much love. In our beautiful, cultural, and populated city of Toronto what have we noticed? BEARDS! LOTS AND LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL AND LUSCIOUS BEARDS. There are 5 hairy beauties that have been the rising stars of the beard industry. We all know every woman has a little something for that “bad boy” and what beard is our best fit for that image? The full beard.

THE FULL BEARD

It immediately grabs the attention of the ‘peasants’ that dare cross paths with you. Providing a beastly aura of strength, confidence, and mystery to your appearance. It can be increasing challenging for a stubborn woman (which are most of us) and will keep her on her toes. A masculine Viking bushy style is definitely  the perfect kick off for a mesmerizing and powerful bearded entrance to the new year.

UNEVEN BEARD

Our rising shaggy star this season has been the UNEVEN BEARD, most often seen with the equally as popular UNDERCUT hairstyle. A beard flowing with your common daily hair looks is always a blessing. Give yourself a nice fade where your side burns join with your beard, allowing your beard to emerge at its most clean cut  and well groomed presentation. Added definition to your face resulting in the mysterious look most women have become slaves to.

CAPTAIN BLACK BEARD

Our black beauties have a hairy advantage with beards as well. With the divine gift of small and tight curls giving that look of a complete and full beard and envious volume is easy to accomplish. The wide variety of options to choose from gives them plenty of room for creativity with hairstyles. BONUS!

BEARD- RICKROSS

Rick Ross

THE SHORT BEARD

The first class beard that makes every woman’s knees buckle at just the sight of it. It brings confidence, a regal atmosphere, and pure sex. THE SHORT BEARD, it’s short, it’s clean, easy to maintain, and of course mysterious. With this look you immediately label yourself as the ‘BIG KAHUNNA’ yet it is still perfect for any situation that requires you to play the role of a certified businessman.

POP! GOES THE COLOUR

If you’re the type that likes to stand out and be noticed without a second glance, try adding colour to your eclectic bearded personality. Be mindful of not using permanent dye otherwise you might have to settle with a two toned look in your near and unfortunate hairy future. What is great about this unshaven flair is that it gives you free reign with colour that can work with your general style. Bring a new meaning to the ‘BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL’.

Closet Tips – FSWH’s Jessica Coco

IMG_5341

I always try to keep a tidy and organized closet, but every now and then it manages to get a little out of hand and needs a good purge. Some might call me a hoarder when it comes to my wardrobe. I have a really difficult time parting with some articles of clothing even though I am well aware that they have already run their course in my life. I always think that there will be that one day where I’m looking for that old t-shirt to create a specific look and I won’t have it. I feel like a lot of people have the same mentality as I do when it comes to cleaning your closet. The reality of the matter is, there’s no room for new stuff unless you get rid of some of the old stuff. After a while, some clothing starts to look very worn and loses it’s shape. If you don’t like how it looks anymore or if you know you’re not going to wear it, say sayonara! I usually hand my nicer pieces that are still in great condition down to the younger ladies in my life and the rest gets donated to charity. I NEVER toss anything in the garbage unless it is unwearable (ie. has holes in it, is ripped, or permanently stained).

My mother is the master organizer so I always have her handy to help me arrange my belongings in my closet. Having a purge buddy is a must because they will always give you that extra motivation to weed out the old. I moved from Windsor to Toronto not too long ago and this was a big adjustment for me merely because I had to downsize my closet going from a house to a condo. Although my condo closet is a walk through and quite spacious, I still have to get creative with storage. Here are some photos and easy tips on how to maximize your space:

TIP: keep sweaters and denim folded to save hanging space for blouses and blazers!

TIP: keep sweaters and denim folded to save hanging space for blouses and blazers! Here are some photos and tips on how to save space:

1) Fold all of your sweaters and jeans. This will leave vital hanging space for tops, blouses, skirts and blazers that shouldn’t be folded, preventing them from wrinkling and creasing.

Fold your sweater and leave the hangers for items that crease easily!

2) Stagger your heels, put one foot in front of the other. This allows you to fit more pairs on each shelf. Don’t even bother taking up shelf space by laying out your flip flops/sandals; mine are all neatly organized in storage baskets.

3) Hooks!! Hooks are so crucial in freeing up drawer space. I have various hooks in my closet that hold my hats, long necklaces (prevent them from tangling), handbags, and robes.

HOOKS: major space saver!

HOOKS: major space saver!

4) Use clear trays for your jewelry. I used to keep my jewelry in the boxes and bags that they came in but I realized that it’s so inconvenient because you can’t see what you have and the boxes don’t always stack well. Clear plastic trays allow you to easily stack and see through to what’s below. If you don’t have drawer space for your jewelry, a tackle box will do the trick!

Improved visibility saves you time!

5) Use bins for storage. I have about 3 bins of summer clothing/shoes that I don’t wear during the fall/winter months – and vice versa. Rotating your wardrobe will really free up space. Store the bins under your bed or in another room.

Store your jewellery in clear trays for easy access and visibility!

6) Velvet hangers do the trick for no slip. I absolutely loathe when my tops slip off their hangers and end up on the floor or when I have 5 different styles of hangers going on in my closet – it makes it look very disorganized and messy. Velvet hangers keep my closet looking uniform and provide just enough grip. Now get in that closet and tidy it up! You’ll feel so much better in the morning when you’re picking out your outfit for the day.

10 Ways to Style Your Groomsmen

So today’s post is all about our Groom and his Groomsmen! When planning your wedding much attention and talk is of finding THE dress. However, the challenge of how to style your groom vintage, whilst retaining his unique personal style, can feel just as utterly overwhelming. We all want our groom and groomsmen to be waiting at the end of the aisle with sartorial elegance on our wedding day, and this post is here to help with 10 easy ways to style your groom (and his men) vintage…..

How to Style Your Groom Vintage

Long gone are the days where a grooms only option is the traditional morning suit or tux, accessorized with a pocket handkerchief and cuff links. Oh no, today’s grooms are faced with options almost as endless as ours. I love that our men are now able, and wanting, to put their own stamp on their wedding day style. But with this increase in choice comes an increase in pressure to get it right, which can be daunting – especially for the groom who is happier in a sports kit than a suit! And even if your man has his suit all figured out, giving his look a suitably vintage vibe for your big day, can be just as much of a challenge. I have found the perfect looks, suits, accessories and finishing touches befitting of any vintage wedding, so sit back and take a look, see if these aren’t just the thing.

Waist Coats

Waist coats are the perfect vintage accessory – whatever the era, season or venue! Layered under a jacket, in matching or contrasting material, they look dapper and add some extra warmth for an Autumn or Winter wedding. Or they smarten up a simple shirt, whilst looking more casual than a jacket – and infinitely cooler for a Spring or Summer wedding…..

Braces (or suspenders)

Whether functional or purely decorative, braces/suspenders (is there a difference?) are the accessory of choice for the more relaxed, rustic, casual wedding (Ryan Reynolds even had custom leather suspenders made for his wedding with Blake Lively) Match them to the shirt or suit for a smart subtle look, or be daring and choose a contrasting colour to the suit but match them to the ties, shirt or shoes. Oh and if he decides to go with a patterned pair be sure to keep the shirt plain.

Old World Fabrics

This is a statement look not for everyone, but tweeds, houndstooth and plaid are fun and stylish fabrics for a bold groom looking to channel his inner country gentleman! Even in a suit these textured textiles have the knack of looking more rustic and casual than formal; but at the same time, as the fabric of choice for the aristocracy (according to Downton Abbey) they suggest luxury and elegance…..

Pocket Watches

The perfect vintage accessory, the pocket watch works whatever your groom’s (or wedding’s) style. Such a simple addition it instantly gives some old world elegance to even the most modern of suits! Oh and they make a great gift for your groom – if he’s not lucky enough to have a family heirloom hidden away in a drawer somewhere.

A velvet suit might not be for everyone, but there is something about this plush fabric that evokes age, romance and opulence. It turns a traditional suit into something fancy that you simply won’t be able to keep your hands off! Perhaps a little warm for summer, but it would be perfect for an Autumn or Winter wedding…..

Or if you like the idea of a touch of velvet, but aren’t sold on an entire suit or even a jacket, how about a velvet bowtie?

Cravats

Before the tie or bow tie came the cravat! Considered casual wear at the start of the 20th century, today it is the perfect alternative for a vintage groom looking for something just as dapper but a little different…..

Brogues

Ladies, we all know that shoes make an outfit and it is no different for your groom. If there is one style of shoe that has old world style and sophistication written all over them it is the brogue. Originally worn as a country walking shoe in the early twentieth century, and considered inappropriate for occasions, today they are inextricably linked with the spectator shoes so fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s….

Ultimately, you want to find an accessory or look that reflects the style and personality of the man you love. Of course you want him to look the part! But remember, he will be happiest and therefore look most relaxed, if he’s wearing something he is comfortable in. And there is nothing worse than a groom looking utterly uncomfortable and unhappy, even in an immaculate suit!

The Gentlemen’s Checklist

The Gentleman’s Checklist is not only a guide to the essentials for the dapper lifestyle, but rules to live by because being a gentleman is a choice that never goes out of style.”

  1. CONFIDENCE ….is key!

Without that, little of what you say or do will be as effective as you would like it to be. Know your worth and what you can offer and you’ll be amazed at what gets attracted to your new emanating energy! Dig deep and find the elements that make you authentically you and own it.

  1. SWAGGER & CHARM.

Gentlemen, a healthy dose of both these qualities will let people know you look good, feel good and will inevitable attract people to you. So before you second guess yourself, give yourself the pep talk you need to push those shoulders back and walk like you own the place. Remember, what you convey through body language is communicated 93% stronger than verbal communication so make sure you’re sending the right message.

3. MANNERS

This is not just a dying art form, it’s a must! Whether you’re walking that elderly lady across the street or holding the door open for a mom with a stroller, like it or not, your manners are saying more about you then you realize. The mark of a true gentleman can always be seen in the way he treats those around him.

4. CHIVALRY

Because good old romance ain’t dead yet. To those gents clever enough to truly understand the locks this magical key will open, kudos. For the rest of you … google it ASAP!

5. SIGNATURE SCENT

So she can sense your presence before she even lays eyes on you and stay on her mind long after that kiss good night. Did you know that fragrances smell different on every person? Everyone has a different body chemistry and because of that every scent will translate differently on your skin than the next guy. When purchasing a signature scent keep 2 things in mind: i) what you WANT to smell like and ii) what the fragrance smells like on you after a few hours. You will want to test out a few and DON’T buy the same day – make sure you still like it after the top notes have faded. A gentlemen’s signature scent will not only make an impression, it’s your lasting impression… so make sure it’s a good one.

  1. KNOW YOUR WINE

A gentleman is only as smooth as the wines that he enjoys. Know your basics, this doesn’t mean you need to be a connoisseur but know the difference between a Merlot and a Malbec. Taste a few and determine what your favorites are then find out what year they had the best grapes! You will be dripping of sophistication and elegance as you impress the socks (and maybe more) off your dinner date.

7. A GREAT SUIT … or THREE!

The Gentlemen’s Wardrobe Essential’s Checklist (a more in depth look, in an upcoming article) requires you to be presentable and appropriate for any and all occasions life brings your way. This means you will need in your wardrobe, at minimum, i) a perfectly fit black suit for the unexpected funeral or formal affair ii)  navy suit for daytime functions and less formal occasions iii)  grey suit, to alternate with the navy suit for daytime, less formal occasions as well as the spring/summer months. These three suits will provide you the foundation for a suiting selection for looking dapper and sophisticated no matter the occasion.

  1. A GREAT TAILOR.

Not an option if you do not get your suits custom made. Although I always recommend a made to measure or bespoke suit (which one is dependent on budget) given the option, if you must purchase off the rack, alterations are not something you want to take a chance with. You want people to notice YOU in the suit, not the suit you are in and a great tailor will ensure you get noticed for looking sharp.

9. MENS ACCESSORIES.

Because clothes don’t make the man, his accessories do. Ok so this is obviously arguable, however, a well accessorized gentleman is seen as paying attention to the fine details. So make a point of investing in that great watch, that sexy bracelet and classic sunglasses you’ve been debating; it all adds to the image and look of sophistication and class. It’s all in the details.

  1. VULNERABILITY

What are you passionate about? Job? Car? Sports? Fashion? Family? Don’t be afraid to show off those things that hold a key to your heart – that’s what makes you human and real and nothing is more appealing than a gent who’s not afraid of his emotional side. On the other hand, it also shows that you are multi-dimensional and have hobbies and interests. Whether you are looking to impress that special someone or putting your best self forward with the bosses, showing your human side makes you seem balanced in life and in control of what you want.
